Lockdown-Proofing Your Beauty Routine

Lockdown-Proofing Your Beauty Routine

Second Wave?

As much as we don't like to think about it, there is the looming threat of the 'second wave' of Covid-19 infections this fall. A rise in infection rates could result in another lockdown, which means sadly saying buh-bye to personal services yet again. Although we aren't trying to manifest this into reality, it's better to be prepared than surprised. Here are some ways you can make your beauty routine lockdown-proof, so you can still feel great without relying on your beloved stylist or esthetician.

Stock Up on Treatments

The best gift you can give your hair during a lockdown is a break from heat styling and some TLC with treatments. It's much easier to leave your hair in a wet bun with a treatment in it when you don't have plans for the day! A couple of our favs:

Olaplex No. 3 • $36
A must-have for anyone with chemically treated hair (especially if you lighten your locks).

Gloss.Me Hydrating Mask • $22
This budget-friendly mask is perfect for dry hair that could use some shine & softening.

Pre Book Your Hair Appointments

Getting your schedule nailed down is the best way to stay on top of your hair game regardless of the lockdown situation. Make sure you are getting regular trims and try to book your colour sessions well in advance. If you are pre-booked and we go back into lockdown before your next appointment, you will automatically be on the top of the priority list for when we reopen. You can book as many appointments in advance as you would like and as long as you give us 48 hours notice, there are no fees to cancel or change!

Try an Evo Custom Coloured Conditioner

If you follow us on Instagram you probably already know how much we love Evo's custom coloured conditioner line, Fab Pro. After your colour service, your stylist can mix up a conditioner for your that will perfectly match the formula they used. This conditioner can be used as often as necessary to keep blondes bright or darker colours rich. We sold tonnes of them online during the first lockdown and our clients were obsessed! It's the perfect product to bridge the gap between your appointments.

These conditioners can even be used outside of a colour service to tint your hair. If you have light hair, you can change your hair to a pastel tone! Get yours here.

Invest in Clip-in Extensions as a Backup

If you currently have our semi permanent extensions, there's a chance you may need your maintenance done during a lockdown. Maintenance is required every 5-7 weeks and if you go beyond this, you risk damaging your natural hair. If you absolutely cannot imagine living without your extensions, get a set of clip ins as a back up. We can custom blend (cut) them or tone them to make sure they are perfect.

Clip ins are great because they can also be used if you want to add more volume for special occasions and if you aren't wearing them often, they will last forever. With our new partner Sezzle, you can purchase them today and pay for them over 4, interest-free payments. Easy peasy!

Use a Lash Serum

Are you a lash addict? Lash extensions are one of those beauty services that you just can't perform on yourself and, let's be honest, strip lashes just aren't the same. A lash serum can be applied while you have your lash extensions on to help your natural lashes grow. If you aren't able to get your lashes done due to a lockdown, your natural lashes will at least have some extra length and fullness.

We carry Eye Envy in the salon. It is a great product to get longer, fuller lashes without requiring lash extensions! Ask about it at your next appointment.

Go For a 'Lived-In Colour' Look

The hottest trend right now in hair colour is actually the lowest maintenance! If you usually get a full head of foils, let those roots grow out and go for a balayage service instead. Your stylist will blend your lightened hair into your roots to soften the transition. As your hair grows out, your colour will still look beautiful and you won't be stressed about seeing your stylist if everything shuts down again. Check out this beautiful balayage by Ivette!

The Evo-lution of Good Hair

The Evo-lution of Good Hair

As someone who spent years using drugstore shampoo without a bottle of conditioner in sight, one of the biggest improvements to my lazy hair routine has been investing in the right hair products. Like filling in your eyebrows, you don’t realize how much of a difference it makes until you start doing it - and then wonder what you’ve been doing your whole life until that point.

evo x QALI

When we were deciding which retail lines to carry at QALI, evo ticked all the boxes; it was something a little different than what you could find in every other salon, it had a dedication to sustainability and eco-conscious beauty and it had great products. The packaging was also perfectly on brand with its colourful labels and cheeky descriptions (love that Aussie humour).

QALI evo

evo®'s mission is to create innovative, salon-only products that are simple, luxurious and effective to use: to tell the truth; expose the frauds: keep the hair and beauty industry honest.

Navigating the world of beauty products can be wild - it seems like every company claims to have the best this or the best that or some magical hair serum that will repair split ends, add 4 inches of length and get you back together with your ex. There’s nothing worse than being bombarded with pushy sales tactics to buy things you don’t need, which is why we carefully chose the product lines we sell and only recommend products that we use and love ourselves.

QALI evo

evo products are free from sulfates, parabens, silicones and other unpronounceable chemicals found on the back of shampoo bottles - they’re also accredited PETA cruelty free and substitute synthetic ingredients with natural ones when possible. To break it down, there are no cancer-causing chemicals that can damage or suffocate your hair, they minimize their environmental impact by using naturally sourced ingredients and no cute bunnies are ever harmed. They also purchase government carbon offset credits to make up for the unavoidable carbon impact that comes with any manufacturing process.

evo x YOU

For anyone navigating the hair care world for the first time, knowing what products to buy can be tricky - the great thing is that we use all of the products that we sell.  When you come in for a treatment we’ll use the products best suited to your hair type and what you’re looking for so you can try them out before deciding if you want to buy some to take home.

evo products are meant to complement each other so you can create whole new products by mixing and using multiple products together. You can take a moisturizing treatment and mix it with a volumizing lotion so you get hydration as well as volume, you can mix a texturizing clay with shine drops to get hold and shine or you can mix a volumizing mousse and volumizing powder to get maximum lift and hold - the possibilities are endless.

If you come down during a busy time, one of the first things you’ll notice when you walk in is that it smells so.fricken.good in here. The word on the street is that the person who develops evo’s scents came over from Tom Ford - there’s nothing better than great looking hair that smells amazing too. I avoided using dry shampoo because I couldn’t stomach the smell of most of them, but evo has managed to create one that I really like. If the Shebang-a-bang dry spray wax was a perfume I would wear it.

Stay tuned for most blog posts showing off our favourite products and how to use them, drop a comment if there’s anything you want to see!

From Black to Boho | A Colour Journey vol. 1

From Black to Boho | A Colour Journey vol. 1

I'm that client, the one all hairdressers dread. My hair is naturally dark brown, I went blonde 2 years ago, proceeded to go back to brown and now my hair is jet black. Guess what - I want to go light again. I'm a nightmare. Did I mention that I used some box dye in there too? Let's not talk about that.

The Kardashians have led us to believe that with new hair colour technology, black to blonde is possible in one day. We are here to tell you that, sadly, without extreme damage, it ain't that easy. To help clients (and myself) better understand the process to safely lighten hair, we are going to document my entire journey. We will share the products used, processes required and the costs associated with each stage.

QALI Hair Colour Journey Blog

I had a half head of our semi permanent extensions so the first step was to remove my extensions so we could focus on transitioning my natural hair. When working with extensions we always want to get your hair to the desired colour first, then we match your fresh locks to your new extensions. To get the final look we will be using extensions in the shade Boho to make my hair appear lighter than it is. Extensions are a great way to make a huge change without compromising your natural hair.

Fun fact (and a good PSA for anyone with coloured hair) - anti-dandruff shampoo strips hair colour! Before we start chemically lightening my natural hair, I'll use classic Head & Shoulders 2-3 times per week to lift the colour. I'll follow each shampoo with Olaplex conditioner and an EVO deep conditioning treatment to avoid drying my hair out in the process. This will go on for at least 2 weeks or until we see a decent shift in the colour of my hair.

My next blog post will cover the lightening process and the chemical services we'll use to kick it all off. In each stage we will break down the services used and the total cost to date. Here's where we are so far:

Extension Removal - Free
Head & Shoulders Mini - $2.50
Olaplex Conditioner - $36
EVO Deep Conditioner - $34

TOTAL $72.50

All colour corrections are unique and won't always be approached with the same methods. If you need a colour correction, book in for a free consultation so we can determine what's required to achieve your dream hair!

See you next week!
